Daniel Hale Williams Preparatory School of Medicine: Phil Cotton & Margy Stover, High School

What is the future of classroom design?

-Daniel Hale Williams Preparatory School of Medicine High School, Teacher Phil Cotton and Teaching Artist Margy Stover

We’d hoped for students to design and construct portable personal learning “pods.” These “pods” were to consider the distinction and relationship between public shared areas and individual private spaces.

Students were to analyze school chair and desk design, and modernist design principles, and critique how chairs and desks, especially in school settings, are indicators of roles and hierarchies. Students had hoped to design and build their own learning “pod,” combining and challenging the idea and functions of “chair” and “desk.” Their “pods” might also symbolize how they see their role in the community.

Unfortunately the pandemic required school closure, and policies kept us from being able to meet with our Teaching Artist via remote platforms.
