William and Dana’s class staged a participatory art making event outside the school with William’s Mobile Street Art Cart. Students created screen prints and colored them in in real time inviting both the other SCALE classes and passers by to participate. The sharing was one day before Election Day and all of the screen print messaging encouraged people to get out the vote.
Vanessa and Michelle’s class shared multiple ongoing projects including video making script writing, puppet shows and stop motion animation.
Sarah and Gaby’s class presented an original choreography about Dia de los Muertos. The students gave a presentation about the meaning and significance of the holiday and shared Pan de los Muertos with the audience. They also taught the audience their dance and the entire group performed together.
In Jessica and Maria’s class students presented their artist books and sugar skulls to the other after school SCALE classes. Afterwards, students discussed their projects and process in small groups and in one-on-one conversations. They shared their individual work and answered questions from the visiting teachers and students.
Juan Carlos and Mary Beth’s class set up stations for each stage of their project so far. Students were at each station explaining to their audience how they completed each stage of the project and the meaning behind their work. The sharing ended with a whole group discussion about what they had seen in all the Tuesday/Thursday classes and what were the Big Ideas of the projects.
Megan and Lucila invited their audience to participate in warm up movement activities. Students then presented how they are coming up with their own movement pieces and taught those moves to their audience in small groups exploring the question: “How does dancing together help us grow stronger as a community?” and “How can each individual can bring can share who they are/what they like through dance”
Jessica and Lety’s students shared their audience the basics of camera operations, and then worked in small groups to take portraits of people and things in the classroom. While students worked, Lety and Lucila had time to talk about how they are exploring arts integrated curriculum with one another.
Emmy and Olga’s class demonstrated their theatre game warm up activity and then students performed scenes from play the students are in the process of creating.
Erin and Patty’s students presented their definition of Repurposing and why it is important today. Students shared their sewing designs with their audience and audience members learned some basic sewing techniques.
Nadia and Tommy’s students demonstrated their percussion warmup and the audience participated in a large-scale drum exercise. The teachers also presented the plans for the class’s film making and had a discussion with the audience about different types of films.
